We’re moving – again…..
People often ask me what the biggest challenge has been growing CachOfTheDay and Scoopon.
And to be honest, I can’t pin it down to a single factor, my answer is always the same, “growing pains”. Growing pains – such a nebulous concept – but something that many fast growing businesses go through. We have experienced 100 per cent year-on-year growth since we started and with that come everyday challenges to ensure we have in place the people, infrastructure and processes to support our rapid growth.
If you look back to my blog 8 months ago, I was talking about how excited we were to be moving into our HUGE (4600m2) headquarters in Moorabbin, with lots of office and warehouse space to grow. When we moved in we were sure that this would be our home for the next 4-5 years. No problem!
Wow, I was so wrong!
At the time Scoopon had a staff of six nationally. We now have a team of 80 and growing very fast. In fact 40 of them are sitting on top of each other in our Moorabbin headquarters!
Add to that another 120 or so CatchOfTheDay staff and we are a massive team of 200 now, and still growing.
Anyway, I am happy to announce that we are expanding our operations and will be opening a second warehouse in the suburb of Braeside. The new space is four times the size of our current location – that’s over 16,000m. It’s HUGE!
Everyone is naturally very excited and is looking forward to not having to hold important meetings in the kitchen or on the lawn outside the building and not having to park their cars 500 meters down the road!
But the real reason for the move is really to improve productivity and shipping times.
Lets be honest, everyone knows that CatchOfTheDay has the best deals in the country that is undisputable. We get more visitors than any other site out there, and we sell more items than anyone else. But we are not the fastest.
Which brings me back to the starting point: growing pains. Every single year we sell more than twice than we sold the year before, it’s a lot of fun, but it’s not easy.
With the extra space in the new warehouse we are certain we can significantly improve shipping times. This is coupled with the arrival of some seriously smart new people who will help us to improve all areas of our operations – from finance to logistics to customer service to buying.
It won’t happen over night, but it will happen. We should be sitting at our flashy new offices on the 20th of August, and we look forward to bringing to you a bigger, brighter and better CatchOfTheDay experience very soon.
Thanks for sticking with us for the ride.
