Nova’s Catch of the Day Addiction!

Are you addicted to Catch of the Day?

It seems like Nathan from Nova FM Perth is! Listen in below to hear the extremely extensive list of awesome items he’s picked up from us recently.

We’re impressed he was able to remember so many items, let alone fit them into his (online) shopping cart! So let’s hope he can find a use for all them, but at the end of the day we’re just glad that someone is having so much fun shopping online with us.

Enjoy your stuff, Nathan!

We’re Moving!

We’ve got some great news – we are moving into a new home – yay! The new office is beautiful, spacious, cool and everything else you could ever want.

It will accommodate all office staff from Braeside as well as the Scoopon team who will be joining us from Moorabbin.

We are taking over the office space that previously housed Adidas Australia, a real household name, looks like The Catch Group steadily moves in the same direction.

The building is located in mulgrave and our new next door neighbours are BMW, K-Mart and McDonalds (which is a handy 100m walk away).

The new office measures at 5500m2 – so to put it into perspective: Braeside’s office is 1000m2 and Moorabbin’s measures at 600m2 – so we’re hoping we don’t grow out of this one too quickly!

On top of the regular amenities you expect in an office we also have our own basketball ring, a “sort of” tennis court and a soccer goal on its way … 2 BBQS are located in the outdoors area, with a door leading to our own personal Gym too!

Scroll below to see some images – Adidas have taken good care of the building , we’re happy to tell you that it’s all ours. We are looking to move in the first 2 weeks of December.

The Catch Group – impossible is nothing.

6 years ago, a small team of 6 were sitting around a PC at midnight within a tiny 250m2 warehouse in Moorabbin, Melbourne. As they counted down 5,4,3,2,1 Blast off – catchoftheday.com.au was born.

With a simple premise of selling one deal a day, our first deal was a Thomson DVD Recorder (http://bit.ly/P4relJ) for $79. We had 300 in the warehouse, but within the hour the site crashed and we only managed to sell 13 units…

4 out of the 6 original team members are still with us today. But since then we’ve managed to grow slightly to a team of 600 people, running 6 different industry-leading sites.

Ok, enough with the number 6.

It’s certainly an understatement, but it’s been one hell of a ride. Today catchoftheday is the most talked about online player in the aussie scene, Australia’s undisputed no.1 shopping site, the most viewed shopping site, and the accolades go on! I would like to take this opportunity and thank each and every one of our amazing staff members – without their energy and hard work none of this would have been possible.

We have an amazing team and an unbelievable work culture that feels more like a family than people that simply share the same building. This is something that makes me incredibly proud.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our 1000s of suppliers. Again, without their continual support and push you would have had to continue paying full retail prices, and we don’t like doing that, do we?

I know that you love stats, so here is some stuff that I can remember, it may not be the most accurate figures, but I didn’t want to bother the analysts too much:

– Launched 25th October 2006 at midnight. We listed on midnight for about a week, then got really tired from lack of sleep and switched to midday.

– Staff today: 622. Staff at launch: 6

– Warehouse space today: 45,000m2. Warehouse at launch: 250m2

– Our targets for the month of launch were to sell 60 items a day, today we ship about 12,000 orders daily.

– We actually fill about 8 semi-trailers a day and are Australia Post’s no.1 parcel sender!

– Best day ever:  $3m revenue (give or take a few)

– Expected revenue this year: $350m

– Interesting Daily sales figures: 150,000 pieces of Bonds underwear in one day, $1m of Samsung TVs within an hour, 330,000 Ferrero Rocher balls, 675,000 Hungry Jacks vouchers, 11,000 pairs of sports shoes, and the list goes on!

– 2010: Launched Scoopon: Now Australia’s no.1 buying group site for services.

– 2011: Launched Groceryrun: now Australia’s most visited online supermarket.

– 2012: Launched Vinomofo (April), Launched Mumgo  (July), Launched Eatnow  (October)

But with all this success, the most exciting part is that we are still a young kid – just 6 years old. I believe that we have just graduated from the Kindergarten of retail, and are about to embark on a new chapter.

One thing for sure is that we aren’t going to sit still – the market is moving very fast and we want to make sure that we are at the forefront of disruption. We have all the tools to keep moving forward, and we have the talent, motivation and team to help us reach these great heights!

Lastly, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to our amazing customers! We know that without you we are nothing! We appreciate that you have a choice and in many cases you choose to depart with your cold hard cash in favour of our products. We apologise for being pushy sometimes, and we appreciate that you read our emails – multiple times a day sometimes! We’re sorry that if along the way we sold you some crap that you never needed – but this is our job.

To many more years together!

This is Catchoftheday.

Announcing Site No.6

We are beaming with pride and ecstatic to announce that our mini empire is growing – yet again – with the launch of Eatnow.com.au.

I could write an epic about how this baby was conceived but the message is quite simple – order your take away food online and get it delivered. Easy!

We’ve worked hard behind the scenes for over 6 months signing up over 1800 restaurants, building a whole new team and we are super excited about the result. Because let’s be honest, who’s got time to cook these days? There are better things to do like stalk people on Facebook, follow people we don’t know on Twitter and watch people lounging by a pool on Big Brother.

So go on, log onto the site, enter your postcode, click on a restaurant of your choice, choose from the full menu, sit down, relax and your meal will be home delivered to your door at no extra charge to you!

Anyway, I promised not to write too much…

Check it out and tell your friends about it!

Bon appetit!

We are Moving!

You may remember that last year in September we moved our warehouse and offices, and committed to a site in Braeside Victoria that was double the capacity we needed at the time (14,000 sqm). The idea was to provide room for future growth.

So much for that! Thanks to your incredible support and passion for great deals, over the last 6 months we’ve outgrown our current warehouse – far sooner than we planned to.

Just last month, Catch shipped an average of 10,000 orders per day. We recently launched VinoMofo and Mumgo, both of which are going absolutely gangbusters and moving thousands of items, and guess what – Christmas is around the corner!

You’ve shown us that there is huge appetite for bargains on brands in every category, and our challenge is to now scale up and meet the level of demand.

In response we’ve made a huge multi-million dollar commitment to two new sites:

  1. 25,000 sqm of warehouse space in Truganina, Victoria (we also struggle with the pronunciation), which comes with the option for us to expand at short notice to up to50,000 sqm. That’s over 3 times our current size.
  2. 5,000 sqm of just office space in Mulgrave, Victoria. Almost 4 times our current office space.

This means that we’ll be very well placed to provide you all with extremely fast dispatch for your Christmas / Holiday orders this year, and also fit all the new buyers, customer service, programmers and other team members we need for the foreseeable future (fingers crossed – this is our 4th consecutive move).

Unfortunately this also comes with some short term pain, moving a warehouse of our size, all while shipping out thousands of orders every day is very complex and as much as we have planned and planned and planned, we know that you can’t always rely on things going to plan – so some of your orders will be delayed or affected.

The move started yesterday, and will continue over the next 12 days, so we please ask that over the next two weeks you accept our apologies in advance for any delays incurred on your orders. It’s all for the best, and once we are past this little hurdle, we’ll be back to shipping things out nice and fast.

Thanks again for your phenomenal support, we have a tremendous Christmas/holiday shopping lineup in store with some amazing deals on the biggest brands, we hope you like it!

Thanks for reading,

Anees

2012 – The year of online…

Things are moving along very quickly at the Catch headquarters, so here’s a little summary of what’s going on:

While bricks and mortar retailers are using excuses like “tough retail environment” and “subdued consumer confidence,” the Catchoftheday group has again had its best month ever!

Parameters of success that we like to measure include:

Where we stand – We are Australia’s number 1 shopping site and we have held this title for more than three years now. The exciting part is that our so-called competitors are really starting to lag quite a distance behind.

Outgoing parcels – We are Australia Post’s number 1 parcel sender and have been known to send up to 20,000 parcels a day!

Visitors to the site – Over a particular 24 hour period this month, we had 1.8 million visitors and as many as 85,000 members at a given instance – wow!

Facebook followers – We have over 330,000 followers, more than any other Australian department store. These are real people, not purchased or incentivised to win some prize, but real Aussie consumers interested in engaging with our brand.

Sales and profits – We keep a close eye on the local market. Most players out there spend way more on marketing and operations than they actually earn, meaning they are running at a loss, working hard to acquire some sort of market share in a form of an email list. Catchoftheday is a privately owned business and we, the owners, care about the bottom line. This month has been our most profitable since our inception six years ago. Chances are this record will be broken again in October, our birthday!

How do we keep doing it, you may ask? Good question! It’s basically down to two things: great deals and innovation.

Sounds easy on paper, but here’s how we win the game:

Great deals on great brands – We actually do it; we don’t just talk about it. For the last six years we have been the site that you need to watch every day – the best part? We are only getting better. Some brands that have recently featured include: Asics, Puma, Joseph Joseph, Asus, Dell, Sony, Acer, Samsung, Hitachi, Lenovo, Bodum, Ice, Casio, Nixon, Havaianas, Dickies, Brookes, Belkin, Mooks, Pioneer, High Sierra, Samsonite, Camelbak, Jamie Oliver, Tefal, Crayola, Michael Kors, Microsoft, Steve Madden, Revlon, Guess and the list goes on…

Speaking of better buying, I would like to welcome some more rock stars that have joined our team this month: Aaron and Anjulie (fashion), Pete (sports), Chris (books and DVDs) and, Natasha and Bree (babies/kids). It’s great to have you all on board!

Innovation: They say that if you stay still, you are in effect going backwards. This is even more pertinent in the fast moving world of online retail, so we are constantly creating new avenues and reinventing ourselves to stay at the top of the game. For example, we know that some of you love shopping on the train, some of you in the office and some of you on the toilet (hey, we aren’t in the business of judging.) In honour of that, we’ve made it easier for you to shop how and where you want by launching our mobile site. It has been very successful to say the least.

Our iPad app is currently in the process of being built too, adding to the ever popular group of Apple apps for Catch and Scoopon.

We are working hard on a fresh new design for Catchoftheday that will take us into 2013 with a bang. We’ve been monitoring the way the site is being used and through this we’ve developed a better understanding of what you like and what you don’t. We have been busy cooking up something that will certainly keep you coming back for more…stay tuned!

A big hello to our sister sites: Scoopon, GroceryRun, Vinomofo and Mumgo! They’re all doing extremely well and gearing up for a very busy Christmas rush.

2012 – The year of online…

Lots more exciting stuff coming soon!
