How to Dress Denim 3 Different Ways

Denim is a man’s best friend (that’s what they say right?) Everyone owns a pair of jeans and knowing how to embrace your own style with your favourite pair means you can get away with wearing them pretty much anywhere. We’ve styled up three different looks with denim to take you from the streets to a fancy dinner and even out to the basketball court; our three ways with denim – men’s style edition.

1. Denim on Demin Street Style

Denim on denim can look awesome if done well. The trick is to wear multiple denim pieces of different shades to pull it off correctly. We love the look of dark denim jeans paired with a super laid back open denim shirt for that casual look and with some chunky Timberlands and classic Ray Ban Clubmaster sunnies, this is the perfect any time street look.

Who said denim on denim can’t work? We are loving this street style!

2. Relaxed Sporty Denim

Denim style joggers are trending this year so we thought we’d throw together a sporty denim look with some of our favourites! You can’t go past a good pair of Nike trainers and some The North Face gear for the perfect relaxed sporty look!

3. Dressed Up For Night

Dark denim is the best choice for going out at night as it gives a more dressed up look. Throw on a sweet long sleeve shirt (those winter nights require sleeves) with a pattern that suits your style and some casual shoes and you’ll have a dressed up look without too much effort.

How to Hunt For Bargains Online Like an Expert

Jasmine Boothey from BargainMums.com.au is a busy mum and bargain huntress extraordinaire. We caught up with her to pick her brain about how she tracks down the best bargains from her dining room table…

Hi Jasmine! Thanks for chatting to Catch Culture! Tell us a little about yourself and your blog…

I’m a mum of two living in Adelaide and I’m a keen bargain hunter.  I studied and worked as an accountant before having kids so I have always loved working with numbers.  I now share my knowledge of how to still live a great life on a budget through my website, Bargain Mums.  Bargain Mums is a mixture of money saving tips and advice, as well as budget recipes made using simple, easy to find ingredients.

When it comes to my online shopping style, I’m definitely a bargain hunter.

I always wait for sales before buying anything.

So what do you look for in a product?

While I might be a bargain hunter, that doesn’t mean I like to buy cheap and nasty.  I always look out for products that are great quality and likely to last the distance.  I would much rather buy a product that costs a little more but will last a long time and actually do the job it’s supposed to do, instead of a cheaper item that will break in a number of months and have to be replaced.

You can actually save money by buying quality.

If you had to choose one thing you love about online shopping what would it be?

I love the convenience of online shopping.  With two kids heading to the shops is often the last thing I feel like doing.  Online shopping means I can shop at any time that suits me, even if it’s late at night, and it doesn’t matter if I get interrupted.

Tell us a little about the bargains you found recently on Catch of the Day?

I found so many bargains when I was searching on Catch of the Day.  I was tempted by the kids toys, and huge range of discounted groceries, but I instead opted for the cookbook sale.  I absolutely love cooking, baking in particular, and I love to collect cookbooks.  I added four new books from Catch of the Day to my collection.

Bargain Mums Cookbooks
Bargain Mums Shoutout on Instagram “4 cookbooks for only $75, including postage. The cheapest I could find them for elsewhere was just under $100 without postage” #catchofthedayau #bargainmums

The cookbooks I purchased were a fantastic deal.  I paid $75 including shipping for the 4 books.  I then did a little research on the internet to see how the price compares to other online retailers, and the cheapest I could find the same books for elsewhere was $95, and that didn’t include shipping.

You used the app to make your purchases. What stood out to you about using the Catch of the Day app?

I found the process of using the Catch of the Day app very easy.  So many apps out there are very buggy and I just end up jumping on my computer instead, but not this one.  From browsing the individual Catch of the Day sales, to the checkout and payment process, it was all very smooth and easy.

And lastly, to get a little cheeky…where were you when you made your purchases?

I actually made my purchase at my dining room table while my toddler ate lunch, using my mobile!  That’s the great thing about the app, it’s so easy to shop anywhere, anytime.

Thanks to Jasmine for sharing her story with us on the Catch Culture Blog. You can check out her blog bargainmums.com.au and her facebook page for awesome recipe and money saving ideas!

5 Types of People To Avoid At The Gym

By Clara

If you’ve ever set foot in the gym you’re likely to have met all of these typical gym types. From the dedicated bodybuilders staring at themselves while they lift weights in the mirror, to the narcissistic selfie girl who hasn’t even worked up a sweat in fear that it will ruin her Instagram worthy shot.

If you want to get a good workout in next time you’re at the gym, here’s a list of five types of people to avoid at the gym:

1. The over-ambitious beginner

The over-ambitious beginner hasn’t been to the gym in years but has decided that this year they are going to get fit. You’re most likely to spot the OAB in the gym during the first few weeks of the year but other trigger points include birthdays or their ex getting a hot new partner. They turn up to BodyBalance and make a point of informing the instructor, and anyone else who’ll listen, that they are ALSO doing BodyPump. They say this with a hint of indulgent pride while insinuating that one class a night just isn’t enough. You’ll normally find them in a puddle of sweat on the floor twenty minutes into BodyBalance and it’s very unlikely you’ll ever see the OAB in the gym again.

 2. The professional

The professional gym-goer is much too good and they are ruining things for the rest of us. They are the girl in the Zumba class with eight years of ballet, jazz and tap experience and keeps their technique tight when the rest of us are just moving our bodies vaguely in time with the music. We’re in a community leisure centre that smells like BO and broken dreams lady, no need to act like you’re in the Royal Ballet! Keep an eye out for the professional gym-guy, who most likely did karate until he was 17 and despite a lapse of ten years believes that the women in the BodyAttack class need to work on their form. You call that a fist ladies!?

3. The over-sharer

The over-sharer is that person who desperately needs to show you the pictures of her kids on her phone. Hell, she wants to show you the photos of her next door neighbours kids. The over-sharer delays the start of the class by asking the instructor intrusive questions about his/her recent holiday to Vietnam. “But what was the exact name of the tailor who you use? Were they in the old quarter? How much did it cost? How long did it take and did they have new fashion magazines to use as guides?” The over-sharer is at the gym to make friends. Maybe they are really lonely. Maybe they actually just want to delay the start of BodyCore (and who can blame them). Whatever deep psychological issues underlie their needy condition, can they work it out somewhere else?

 4. The pickup “artist”

If the over-sharer above is often (but not always) a woman, the pickup artist is often (but not always) a man. We are sure some loving relationships and, let’s be honest, fantastic flings, have probably started with eyes meeting across a crowded spin class but the line between an adorable “meet cute” story and a“creepy guy asking me out at the gym” story is really thin. If you’re known for creepin’ at the gym you’re almost certainly on the wrong side of it (unless you’re Channing Tatum). Wearing gym clothes and sweatily failing to touch your toes while a pop song exhorts you to be sexy is already a vulnerable position and some dude in alarmingly see-through leggings asking you what you’re doing after class is certainly going to make you want to run for the nearest no-males-allowed Curves gym.

5. The team players

The team players are the types of people you have to assume can’t go to the bathroom without taking a buddy. They arrive in a throng, a posse, a gang. They are friends or siblings or partners (worst of all!). When you file into the class they will ask you to move so they can stand next to their bff, Regina. You really don’t want to move because this spot gives you the perfect view of the instructor while also allowing you to partially hide behind the person in front. They laugh and giggle during the class at their in-jokes and make a midweek cardio session feel like high school where you’re not allowed to sit with them. One day though, Regina won’t make it to class and Gretchen will be running late and you’ll get to see Karen look all lost and alone…savour that day.

If you manage to successfully avoid these five types of people during your next attempt to workout, well done, we salute you!

If you’ve ever been sucked into a conversation with an over-sharer, trapped by the pickup artist in the weights area or stuck next to the team players during a class, then you’re sure to have a funny story about it, so tell us in the comments!

7 Awesome Aussie Movies For Your Next Movie Night!

By Sean

Nothing says summer nights more than a good movie session (preferably on a rooftop or at an outdoor cinema!) So if your organising a movie night with your friends, we’ve taken care of the line-up. We’re talking Aussie Movies! In this list of 7 awesome Australian-made movies, there’s something for everyone, so grab the remote and the popcorn, and fire up your Blu-ray player for a crack at these recent Australian films:

Our home-grown Aussie movies that are actually awesome!

The Babadook

Starring Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman.

An Aussie breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival, The Babadook is just about the only horror you need to watch this Australia Day. Hell, make this your go-to horror for the rest of the year. It comes from first-time director Jennifer Kent, who manages to turn what could’ve been a boring, paint-by-numbers ghost story into something that’s closer to the horror classic, The Shining. Yes, that is a comparison to The Shining. This movie is that good.

Available now on Blu-ray & DVD.

Charlie’s Country

Starring David Gulpilil, need we say more?

If The Babadook is your must-see Aussie horror flick, then Charlie’s Country is your must-see Aussie movie, period. Bringing together two Australian legends: actor/writer David Gulpilil and writer/director Rolf de Heer. It’s a thought-provoking, heartbreaking and incredibly important film that’s been praised by everyone from David and Margaret to the judges at the Cannes Film Festival (where Gulpilil won the ‘Best Actor’ award).

Available now on Blu-ray & DVD.

Tracks

Starring Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver and gorgeous shots of Australian wilderness.

Based on Robyn Davidson’s memoir, this film follows Wasikowska on a nine month, 2,700 kilometre trek from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. With photography from the acclaimed Mandy Walker (who also shot the equally exquisite, Australia), this movie will fill you with wonder and awe and provide you with stunning proof that Australia is a terrifyingly beautiful place.

Available now on Blu-ray & DVD.

The Mule

Starring Angus Sampson, Hugo Weaving, Leigh Whannell, Noni Hazlehurst and John Noble

Aussie films are known for their ability to find the humour in just about any situation. In The Mule, writer and star Angus Sampson makes that situation as physically uncomfortable as possible. The film follows Sampson, who is detained by law enforcement on suspicion of hiding drugs within himself, to put it politely. Hugo Weaving, a dogged officer, simply decides to wait until Sampson gives up the goods as the full story unravels around them.

Available now on iTunes.

Predestination

Starring Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor

From the directors of the vampire romp, Daybreakers, comes Predestination: a time-travelling, manhunting, mind-bending good time. Temporal Agents Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook (in a star-making performance) hunt for the elusive ‘Fizzle Bomber’ throughout time, in a desperate attempt to save millions of lives. Hailed by critics and audiences alike, think Minority Report, except layered with twisty time travel antics.

Available now on Blu-ray & DVD.

The Rover

Starring Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson and Scoot McNairy.

Director of the instant classic, Animal Kingdom, David Michôd returned last year with The Rover, a dark and gritty near-future thriller. Guy Pearce enlists Robert Pattinson to help reclaim his stolen car from a pack of thieves. Basically, it’s Mad Max, only taken completely seriously. Robert Pattinson turns in a unique and engrossing performance. A must-watch, if only for this amazing scene:

What We Do In The Shadows

Starring Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer (plus a sneak cameo from Murray!)

Okay, this one’s cheating a little. It’s not technically an Aussie film (it’s from New Zealand) but it’s just too damn good to leave out of this list. Take Flight Of The Conchords’ Jemaine Clement, team him up with the talented director of Boy, Taika Waititi, then put them both to work on a mockumentary-style comedy about three ancient vampire housemates who are struggling to live in the modern world, and you’ll come close to the insanity that is What We Do In The Shadows.

So If you are blessed with a cool Summer night this week, show your true blue Aussie colours by grabbing one of these awesome films and celebrating with a good marathon!
